imaginary solutions
opening reception:
friday, apr 1st from 5-8pm

Explorations in experimentation can lead to discovery or rediscovery in found objects.  Jerry Mischak uses urban debris and consumer materials to explore their meaning through their newly found function as wall pieces either wrapped or encased in duct tape or plastic. Jerry Mischak creates boldly energetic instances that create a sense of playfulness while maintaining their distinct unconventional rational.

factory work series
opening reception:
friday, apr 1st from 5-8pm

The Factory Work Series allows tension to balance between traditional thought, and the modern cultural ideas placed on labor, production and effort.  The effect creates two different textures that invoke the stark contrast between the almost helpless figures and the clout of industry that is seeming controlling deluded habits.

instruments of cope.
feb+mar 2011

Instruments of Cope documents the void that space creates between, in, and around the object.  Rather than space creating the object, or the object creating space, the two become physical in their nature to one in other, which in turn creates and explains the ideas behind reflection, therapy, and lament as to describe the emotions conjured that remind us of each other.

i have ringworm.
mar 2011

The mind molds memories into images that are not always conventional or accurate.  Bryan Satalino sees the imperfection of the wonder that is the brain as an opportunity to express the labyrinth of unexplored
notion and thought.  Through the assortment of delicate tones, colors, and composition, the paintings and drawings create a surreal experience that extends beyond the edges of the picture plane.

Matthew Alden Price | Hanji Field Paintings
Jung-hak Lee | Ceramics
01OCT10 - 30NOV10

In an international exchange, Hanji Field Paintings by Matthew Alden Price and Ceramic Vessels by Junghak Lee will be on view at Philadelphia's meltemBIREY Gallery through the months of October and November.

Price is an internationally-recognized ceramicist, sculptor, furniture designer, and concurrently - in his own right - a painter. The exhibition marks the first installment of one of his largest works to date. The work operates most significantly as a placeholder for experience, relying on the aesthetic topologies of human domain. Paper and textile are the material domiciles of human tradition and expression, and Price takes his cues in earnest.

Junghak Lee is a South Korean ceramicist making her debut in the States. Her work offers a dialectical contribution to turn-of-the-century ceramic craft, engaging with both the traditional mastery and symbolic sensibilities of the medium. Her pieces are imbued with a sense of self-criticality and a desire for perfection. The vessels are a transcendent body of work, mathematically precise as they are organically compelling.

AUG+SEPT 2010

PULP is an exploration of paper's potential.  Through form, drawing, surface variation and color; the artists of PULP work with the limits of paper as both a flat and spatial medium.  The ideas presented within this family of work are primarily problems of design, execution and control.
